"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are".
Ubuntu
is a complete operating system, freely available with both community
and professional support. It is developed by a large community and
anyone is invited to participate to the project ! It is based on Debian
Linux, a non commercial distribution of Linux. It inherits its famous
package management system : Apt, which allow in addition to Synaptic to
download, install, uninstall and upgrade software with your mouse
without managing dependences problems. Advanced users can use their
favourite command-line anyway.
The Ubuntu community is built on
many ideas. First, software should be available free of charge. Second,
software tools should be usable by people in their local language
without any disabilities. Finally, people should have the freedom to
customise their software by any ways. The users must have an access to
the software source-code. They must have a license which allows them to
modify and use the software freely.
Ubuntu Linux is a very reliable
operating system. Every six months a new release is made. Security
updates are free of charges for both enterprises and end user.
In the past, Linux installation
caused lot of problems because some peripherals were not recognized.
Linux has been improved and now lot of peripherals are available on
Linux. This includes the drivers from thrid parties. If you'd like to
test Ubuntu before you install it, you can download a "Live CD"
version. It is a self-booting CD that should give you a idea of what
you will have with a full installation.
Ubuntu includes many translations from the open source movement, to make Ubuntu usable by as many people as possible.
The amount of software available
is staggering : there are more than 16,000 different packages. That's
right, a lot of these packages are not very useful for the main part of
the users. Some of theses packages are simply awesome applications that
are not installed by default. If you're a software junkie, and you want
to access these goodies, you must setup your Apt program. Non-Free
packages can be downloaded too. Non-Free does not mean that you must
pay, it just means that the software can't be classified in the Free
Software category. Software patent implies that all pieces of softwares
can't be free. There are multiple example of programs which are very
used by users and which are proprietary software : dvd and mp3
libraries, ATI or Nvidea 3D drivers, Flash format, Java programming
language and Quicktime video format. The package management via apt-get
and Synaptic programs is really an advantage over other distributions.
Although, there is the couple apt-get and Yum on Fedora distribution,
but it's better to use on a Ubuntu distribution. The procedure might be
the same, but Ubuntu have a killer feature : one universal package
repository where you can find each and everything programs you need.
Most of Linuxes distributions have
got a graphical boot sequence. For example, Mandriva Linux display a
very nice picture with a progress bar which indicates the current step
of the sequence. Ubuntu Linux has just a old school text-based boot
sequence. In the last update, Ubuntu developers just added a pretty
startup screen at boot time. Another problem is concerning the Wifi,
which is a too recent technology to run perfectly on Linux. Some users
are experiencing signal reception problems. Another problem on Ubuntu
is that there is not any CD burning application that allow to burn
audio CDs. It's Gnome fault ! It has a bad history of not having a
decent CD Creation program. This is almost solved now : the file
explorer Nautilus make Data CDs creation really simple. To burn a
iso-file, it's trivial too : right-click on it and select "Burn Image".
But if you want to burn an Audio CD from your favourite songs
collection you still have to use the command-line. Unfortunately all CD
burning application are not supported by all applications. Moreover
using the command-line is not acceptable for a recent distribution like
Ubuntu. The solution is in the next release of Gnome. An other small
annoyance : despite having set the filesystem up on an ext3-partition
(which is a really reliable file system), Ubuntu forces to check it at
every boot time. This remind one of the Windows scandisk software.

Ubuntu includes more than 16,000
pieces of software, but the installation fits on a single CD. Ubuntu
covers every standard desktop application : word processing,
spreadsheet, internet access, web server, email software, programming
languages, tools and of several games.
Ubuntu wins the Linux Journal
Reader's Choice Award for best Linux distribution because it's the
Linux distribution the most accessible to the novice user. Ubuntu is
based on four principles. First, Ubuntu will always be free of charges
for any users and enterprises. Second, Ubuntu is released regularly and
predictably : a new released is written every six month. Each release
is supported with security updates and bugs fixes for eighteen months.
Third, the system must be available for a lot of people. So Ubuntu
includes the best programs translations that the Free Software
community has to offer. Finally, Ubuntu is free software : anyone is
encouraged to help community in improving software features. Today,
Ubuntu community contains lot of different people. There are
translators, which translates the programs in other languages in order
to make them more accessible. The community contains also lot of
developers. They are able to write software allowing you to use your
computer easily. Some artists are contributing to the project in
designing icons, colours and themes for your desktop. In the community,
there are also people which are writing documentation, programs tips
and guides. Finally, YOUR support to the community will be welcome. If
you want to contribute goto #ubuntu-devel in order to get in touch with
the community. Whereas Ubuntu is mostly referred as a Desktop
distribution, it can also be installed as a web server. So, Ubuntu can
be used for setup a mail or http server.
Windows is a intuitive and very
accessible for every user because of the simplicity of its graphical
interface. So, the question is :
Can a
Ubuntu Linux replace Windows for home use ?
There
are many differences between windows programs and linux programs.
Programs are often OpenSource and free on linux. There is no license to
buy for programs on Linux operating system. There is no software piracy
either because it's legal to share them with other users. Does free
software have the same quality than propriatary ones ?
The Ubuntu Linux installation has
text-based interface whereas Microsoft apply very nice-looking user
interfaces for the installation of its products. It is not a real
problem because Ubuntu Linux installation is very simple. Moreover, the
web has very large resources that defines the few installation steps.
On a typical computer, the Ubuntu installation should take less than 25
minutes. All the same, Windows installation is more fine for advanced
users, because of the presence of a partionning tool permiting you to
manage your disks. After the setup, your Linux is already useful. You
can use office tools like a word processor or a spreadsheet, browse the
web with the great Firefox, and even play with some games. Unlikely,
the first time you install Windows operating system, you are forced to
install other programs. For example, the first obligatory application
you download is a real worthy web browser in order to replace the
blasted Internet Explorer.
One of the killer features of Ubuntu Linux is the codenames of the version which are very funny. Let's see.
